Which Dixie Howell? - --Mischa 13:45, 17 January 2010 (EST)

Neither one of them seems right. Dunno --Jeff 01:23, 18 January 2010 (EST)

SABR says its Millard Fleming Howell, which would be Dixie Howell (howeldi01). He was only 26 at the time, but I guess its possible. --Jeff 23:11, 9 March 2011 (EST)

Baseball Digest has an article from June 1999 saying that there was a Millard "Dixie" Howell who was a star athlete at Bama in 1932-34 but never played in the majors. The article says he is not the same person as the first major league Dixie Howell. See two Millard "Dixie" Howells . So that's another possibility, isn't it? His minor league record is here. And I see he's listed as Millard Fleming Howell at our minor league site, while the first major league Dixie Howell is not given a middle name of Fleming on our BR page. By the way, this minor leaguer Dixie Howell was managed by Rogers Hornsby in 1940, sort of interesting given that Dixie was a shortstop while Hornsby had started out as a shortstop. - Randy 23:56, 9 March 2011 (EST)

I think you found him Randy. Nice work. --Jeff 00:05, 10 March 2011 (EST)

Even more good stuff. This is from a baseball for sale: ". . . one of the perplexing autographs appearing on this ball is that of Dixie Howell. Not to be confused with the 'Dixie Howell' of a later era (actually, there were two others by that name), this one is the famed 1934 All-American quarterback from the University of Alabama. He was one of those exceptionally gifted athletes who could have played professionally in several disciplines. For that matter, he did sign with the Detroit Tigers, but never played at the parent level." - see autographed baseball . - Randy 00:14, 10 March 2011 (EST)

I wonder if Thomas Stouch here (and at Furman) is Tom Stouch -

I think its highly likely that the coach at the three schools is all the same guy. The major leaguer was more of northerner, however he did play in South Carolina in 1907-1912, so its reasonable to think he was the same guy. --Jeff (talk) 21:57, 2 December 2013 (EST)
