Biographical Information

Pitcher Steve Searcy was signed as a 3rd round pick in the 1985 amateur draft by the Detroit Tigers and scout Jax Robertson.

As a minor leaguer, Searcy was nearly traded to the Atlanta Braves for Doyle Alexander. The Detroit Tigers decided to trade John Smoltz instead. He was considered a can't miss prospect when he was the International League Pitcher of the Year for the Toledo Mud Hens in 1988, going 13-7, 2.59 with 176 strikeouts in 170 innings. He made his major league debut on August 29, 1988 and went 0-2, 5.63 in 2 games.

He was given a chance to be a regular with the Tigers in 1989, but injuries got the best of him, limiting to 8 games when he went 1-1, 6.04. He also spent some time in Toledo and in Class A with the Lakeland Tigers. He bounced back in AAA in 1990, going 10-5, 2.92 for Toledo, but with Detroit he struggled to a 2-7 record with a 4.66 ERA. After he started slowly in 1991, going 1-2, 8.41 in 16 games, he was released in mid-July and signed with the Philadelphia Phillies. He pitched two season with Philadelphia but could not find the success he had had in the minors. On July 2, 1992, he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers along with Julio Peguero for Stan Javier, but was unable to return to the majors.
