Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Steele Walker was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2018 amateur draft by the Chicago White Sox out of the University of Oklahoma, where he was a teammate of 2018 first-round pick and future NFL quarterback Kyler Murray. He played for the USA College National Team in the summer of 2017, taking part in games against Cuba and Chinese Taipei.
He played in the White Sox minor league system in 2018 and 2019, suiting up for four different teams during that span, including stints with the Kannapolis Intimidators of the South Atlantic League both seasons. After hitting just .209 in 2018, he blossomed in 2019, with a slash line of .285/.361/.451 in 120 games, with 36 doubles, 10 homers and 62 RBIs. On december 10th that year, the White Sox traded him straight up to the Texas Rangers to acquire OF Nomar Mazara, a major league regular.
Steele was inactive until the last month of the 2020 season while the minor leagues were shut down by the Coronavirus pandemic, but was added to the Rangers' 60-player pool at their alternate training site on August 31st, after deadline deals had cleared some space for him. In 2021, he split his season between the AA Frisco Rough Riders and the AAA Round Rock Express. His combined line was .241/.308/.400 in 111 games, with 18 doubles, 15 homers and 61 RBIs. He started 2022 back in AAA with Round Rock and, after spending April on the injured list, was hitting .297 in 20 games with 5 doubles and 3 homers when he was called up to Texas on June 5th. The Rangers had designated former top prospect Willie Calhoun for assignment that day, and Steele was the third top prospect acquired via trade to make his major league debut with the team in a span of one week, after Josh Smith on May 30th and Ezequiel Durán the day before. In Walker's case, he started in left field and batting ninth against the Seattle Mariners and went 0 for 4 with a pair of strikeouts in a 6-5 loss.
