Biographical Information[edit]
James "Steamer" Flanagan played center field for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1905, hitting .280 and slugging .400 in seven games.
The 1905 Pirates won 96 games under player-manager Fred Clarke. Flanagan was seven years younger than star player Honus Wagner.
He is the only major league player, through 2024, remembered by the name Steamer, although Bob Stanley was nicknamed "Stanley Steamer".
Flanagan was at the University of Notre Dame between the years 1900 and 1905, at a time when there were a number of other future major leaguers there. The two most prominent were Red Murray and Bob Bescher.
Steamer was playing minor league ball as early as 1902 with the Toledo Mud Hens, and after his days in the majors spent parts of four seasons with the Rochester Bronchos.
