Biographical Information

Pitcher Silvio Censale was drafted in the 4th round of the 1990 Amateur Draft by the Minnesota Twins but did not sign. He played for Puerto Rico in the 1992 Olympics. The following year, he was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the tenth round of the amateur draft. He began his career with the Batavia Clippers and went 5-2 with a 2.08 ERA, striking out 54 in 52 innings. After sitting out '94, Censale went 10-6 with a 3.15 ERA for the 1995 Piedmont Phillies, striking out 123 in 120 innings. In '96, Silvio was 8-9, 3.92 for the Clearwater Phillies. Moving to AA in 1997, the 26-year-old southpaw went 9-4 with a 4.36 ERA for the Reading Phillies. He had a 1.93 ERA for '98 Reading in just 4 games, presumably due to injury. In 1999, Censale struggled to a 1-6, 11.77 finish, allowing 122 walks and hits in 52 innings. In Organized Baseball, he went 33-27.

Let go by Philadelphia, the left-hander caught on with the independent Camden Riversharks but was just 1-4 with a 8.38 ERA. The Newark Bears then took a flier and he had a 6.00 ERA in six outings there. He was 1-2 with a 2.72 ERA for Nettuno in Italy's Serie A1 in 2000 and then 0-1 in the finals. In 2002, he went 1-0 with a 8.25 ERA for the Atlantic City Surf and was 1-1, 4.63 for the Allentown Ambassadors. He had a 4-2, 4.31 record for Nettuno back in Italy in 2003.

He starred for the Italian national team in the 2003 European Championship, going 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA, 5 hits and 21 strikeouts in 12 innings. He tied Dennis van Hoof, Tom Lyons, Tetsuhiro Monna, Patrick Beljaards, Robin Roy and Pedro Pablo Belmonte for the most wins, was 3rd in whiffs (behind Monna and Roy), was 7th in opponent average (.122, between Roger Kops and Van Hoof), led in K/IP (3.29 ahead of #2 Magnus Pilegård), was 9th in WHIP (between Beljaards and Sean Spencer) and was 6th in opponent OBP (.182, between Van Hoof and Eelco Jansen). Beljaards was named the tourney's All-Star LHP.

In 2006, he is playing for the Newark Bears of the independent Atlantic League.
