Biographical Information[edit]

Catcher Shigeru Tokuami was a four-time All-Star in Nippon Pro Baseball.

Tokuami was signed by the Mainichi Orions in 1950, and he was traded to the Osaka Tigers for Isao Odate before the season started. As their starting catcher, Tokuami hit .251/.293/.324 in his rookie year, and he set the team record for 69 RBI as a rookie. He was then selected into the 1951 NPB All-Star Games, and he was 0-for-1. He ended up hitting .253/.294/.310 in 1951, and he had a .251/.290/.309 batting line in 1952. Tokuami attended the 1953 NPB All-Star Games, and he was 1-for-1 with a double against Tokuji Kawasaki in Game 3. His batting line was .283/.299/.343 in 1953.

The Kyoto native was selected into the 1954 NPB All-Star Games, and he was 0-for-3. He ended up hitting .269/.307/.299 in 1954, then he recorded a .220/.243/.261 batting line in 1955. Tokuami attended the 1955 NPB All-Star Games, and he was 1-for-3m with a single against Motoji Takuwa in the 2nd inning of Game 2. However, he slumped to .169/.188/.217 in 1956, and Kazuo Ishigaki took his spot. Tokuami only had 22 at-bats in 1957, then he hit .133/.148/.133 in 113 games in 1958. He announced his retirement in 1959. He coached Kyoto University of Advanced Science after retiring.

Overall, Tokuami hit .246/.279/.299 with 542 hits and 7 homers in 10 seasons in the NPB.
