Biographical Information

Shigeo Hasegawa played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 11 years.

Hasegawa was signed by the Nankai Hawks in 1956, and he was named their starting first baseman as a rookie. He hit .282/.363/.394 in his rookie year, then he had a .254/.310/.406 batting line in 1957. Hasegawa broke out in 1958, hitting .276/.368/.478 with a career-high 16 homers. He was 9th in the Pacific League in batting (between Takao Yato and Seiji Sekiguchi), 3rd in runs (tied with Yasumitsu Toyoda), 2nd in walks (5 behind Futoshi Nakanishi) and 4th in homers (tied with Sekiguchi). Hasegawa also attended the 1958 NPB All-Star Games, and he was 1-for-2, with a single against Masaaki Koyama.

The Hiroshima native improved to .302/.377/.466 in 1959, and he would have ranked 6th in batting (between Teruyuki Takakura and Akio Saionji) if he had qualified. Hasegawa had a 1-for-6 record in the 1959 Nippon Series with a clutch 2-run single against Motoshi Fujita in Game 2, and he won his only Nippon Series title as the Hawks swept the Yomiuri Giants. He hit .274/.341/.389 with 8 homers in 1960, and his batting line was .262/.365/.380 in 1961. The Hawks then traded him with Haruo Handa and Yosuke Terada to the Chunichi Dragons for Noboru Inoue, and he hit .229/.327/.403 in 79 games in 1962. Hasegawa was sent to the Kintetsu Buffaloes after the 1962 season, but he only hit .171/.269/.280 in 1963 then he announced his retirement. He passed away due to a car accident in 1966.

Overall, Hasegawa hit .248/.288/.355 with 852 hits and 61 homers in 11 seasons in the NPB.
