Biographical Information

Scott Wingo was named the College World Series Most Outstanding Player in 2011. His father Bill Wingo played one season in the minor leagues.

Scott Wingo was All-State as a high school senior. As a college freshman, he hit .230/.438/.413 and set a University of South Carolina freshman record by being plunked 17 times. He fielded .978 at second base. He hit .242 that summer for the Gastonia Grizzlies. He struggled big-time as a sophomore at .196/.319/.340, the lowest average by 95 points among the Gamecocks. He fielded .969. During his junior year, Wingo made the All-Southeastern Conference Defensive Team (.963 FLD). He rebounded offensively with a line of .247/.409/.455. In the 2010 College World Series, he came to the plate in the 11th inning of the finale against UCLA with a 1-1 tie; he drew 7-pitch walk from Dan Klein and later scored on a hit by Whit Merrifield to deliver the national title to South Carolina. It was the first College World Series title for South Carolina. Teammate Jackie Bradley Jr. was named the Series' Most Outstanding Player.

Wingo was vastly improved as a senior, hitting .338/.467/.429 with 44 walks and 17 times hit by pitch in 69 games. He scored 47 runs, stole 7 bases in 8 tries and fielded .972. He served as team captain and won All-SEC honors at second base. He was picked by the Atlanta Braves in the 11th round of the 2011 amateur draft. He finished his college career with 63 times hit by pitch, a school record. In the 2011 College World Series, Scott again came up big, hitting .333 with four RBI in five games. In the opener against Texas A&M, he had four hits, including the game-winner in the 9th. In the championship series, he hit the tying single in game one against the University of Florida in the 8th inning to knot it at one. Then, in the 9th, he made a diving stop on a grounder and threw out Mike Zunino at the plate. On the next play, he threw out another runner at home to keep South Carolina alive. South Carolina went on to claim its second straight title. He was named the College World Series Most Outstanding Player, the first senior to take that honor since David Maroul in 2005.

Wingo was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 11th round of the 2011 amateur draft and made his pro debut with the AZL Dodgers on July 17th. He played 4 years in the Dodgers' chain, reaching A ball.

Wingo was an assistant coach at Jacksonville University in 2018, and University of Notre Dame in 2020-2021. He returned to South Carolina in 2022-2023.
