Biographical Information[edit]

Sawyer Carroll played in the minor and independent leagues from 2008 to 2014.

Carroll hit .349 as a junior college sophomore then transferred to Kentucky. He hit .350/.449/.519 as a junior with 56 RBI in 54 games. He hit 23 doubles, three behind Southeastern Conference leader Mitch Moreland. The Washington Nationals chose him in the 18th round of the 2007 amateur draft but he did not sign. Returning for a senior season, he hit .419/.514/.782 with 19 homers, 69 runs and 83 RBI. Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball named him All-American but the American Baseball Coaches Association chose Bryce Brentz, Jason Kipnis, Kent Matthes and Tyler Townsend instead. Carroll had led the SEC in average (.008 over Gordon Beckham, the SEC Player of the Year) and RBI (6 ahead of Beckham). He tied for 12th in NCAA Division I in average, ranked 7th in slugging, tied Jeremie Tice and Brett Wallace for 4th in RBI and tied Tim Fedroff for 5th in total bases. The San Diego Padres chose him in the third round of the 2008 amateur draft; it was a supplemental pick for compensation for failure to sign 2007 third-rounder Tommy Toledo.

Sawyer hit .299/.403/.548 with 41 runs and 39 RBI in 46 games for the 2008 Eugene Emeralds and .219/.296/.266 in 18 for the Fort Wayne Wizards. He was second in the Northwest League in slugging and third in home runs (8). He was named to the NWL All-Star outfield.

Carroll hit .300 for three different Padres affiliates in 2009 - the Fort Wayne Tincaps (.316/.410/.464 in 66 G), Lake Elsinore Storm (.320/.402/.531 in 37 G, 42 RBI) and the San Antonio Missions (.317/.440/.488 in 28 G). Overall, he had 14 outfield assists, 40 doubles, 9 triples, 88 runs, a .317/.413/.498 batting line, 80 walks and 19 steals in 27 tries. He tied Mike Baxter for the best average and most doubles by a Padres farmhand that year. He also was named Star of the Stars in the Midwest League All-Star Game, having gone 4 for 4 with two steals and a run.

Returning to San Antonio in 2010, Carroll started slower and was at .246/.326/.356 after 112 games, though he did have 15 assists.
