San Manuel Stadium in San Bernardino, CA, is the home of the Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino, the Los Angeles Angels' Single-A California League farm team. The city negotiated "of San Bernardino" into the team's name as a condition of the 2016 stadium lease renewal, with the city agreeing to spend up to $2 million in repairs and maintenance.[1]
Designed by HOK Sport (now Populous), the ballpark opened as San Bernardino Stadium in 1996. Nicknamed "The Ranch" while its team was going by the name San Bernardino Stampede, it became the first California League ballpark with a naming-rights deal in 2002. When that expired, the San Manuel Band of Serrano Mission Indians picked it up to promote their San Manuel Casino.
The franchise was founded as a charter member of the Cali, the Fresno Cardinals, in 1941. A year after losing a 30-season affiliation with the San Francisco Giants, it moved to Salinas, CA, and became the Salinas Spurs. Just four seasons later, in 1993, they moved on to San Bernardino - just as the San Bernardino Spirit moved into a brand-new ballpark in Rancho Cucamonga, CA. That being three years before today's ballpark opened, they followed their predecessors into 60-year-old Fiscalini Field. The club remained unaffiliated until signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1995. From 1996 through 2002, the team was called the San Bernardino Stampede.
In 2001, the Stampede changed parents to the Seattle Mariners, and just before the next season the farm club hosted its new parent in an exhibition game - the first baseball game involving a big-league team in The Berdoo in 30 years. Bull Durham (1988), Field of Dreams (1989) and For Love of the Game (1999) star Kevin Costner played shortstop and pitched for the hosts. A year later, the club took the regional name and a nickname saluting the famed U.S. highway.
The ballpark is in the jointly protected territory of the Angels and Los Angeles Dodgers.
