Pitcher Samuel Smith played in the minor leagues in the early 20th Century. Growing up in New York, NY, he bplayed youth baseball with Tommy Clarke, who later became a major league catcher.

He posted a respectable .610 win/loss percentage playing with 1907 Youngstown Champs, going 17-11.

Smith reappeared in 1909 with the Montreal Royals, with a record of 15-14 over 37 games. A newspaper report from the era says he was given a tryout by the Chicago Cubs, but went to Montreal. The Montreal club later sold him and two other pitchers to the Cincinnati Reds for $7000. Fans in Montreal apparently compared him to Amos Rusie due to the speed of his pitches. he never played for the Reds, however.

Staying in Canada, he spent part of 1910 with the Toronto Maple Leafs where he was 6-3 in 20 games. Smith then went down to the B-class Waterbury Finnegans and Holyoke Papermakers for the rest of 1910.

His final seasons were also in Canada, with the 1912 London Tecumsehs, going 3-4 in 8 games. Though no stats are available, a 1913 London newspaper photo shows him with the Tecumsehs team.
