Biographical Information

Sam Wiley was born in Britain and moved to the US at a young age. He won All-City honors his last two years in high school, hitting .423 as a junior and .486 as a senior. He redshirted in 2006 for the Tulane Green Wave and went 2 for 6 in 2007. Transferring to the University of San Francisco, he hit .194/.212/.258 in 2008. In 2009, he moved on again, this time to Westmont College. He led the team in average (.392), OBP (.460) and slugging (.572) and was named All-Golden State Athletic Conference.

He was on Great Britain's roster for the 2009 Baseball World Cup. He hit .333/.366/.487 and was Britain's second-best hitter after Chris Berset, playing mainly right field. He hit a 3-run homer off Eiichi Hirai in a 9-7 loss to Japan. He also had two of Britain's three hits in a loss to Nicaragua.

In 2010 and 2011, Wiley bounced around the pro independent leagues in the US, spending time with the Brockton Rox in the Canadian-American Association (13 games, .270 BA), the Lancaster Barnstormers in the Atlantic League (13 games, .231 BA), the Southern Illinois Miners in the Frontier League (38 games, .209 BA) and the Florence Freedom also in the Frontier League (1 game, .250 BA), compiling a cumulative batting average of .226. He showed great versatility as a fielder, playing 84 games at catcher, 18 in the outfield, 12 at third base and 1 at first base.

In the 2010 European Championship, he was Britain's main catcher; he went 4 for 20 with a home run, four runs and four RBI. He was third on the team in runs and second in RBI. His homer was a two-run jack off Chris Di Roma that provided all the offense in a loss to champion Italy.

Wiley played first base and catcher for the British national team in the 2012 European Championship, batting .190 (4 for 21, 2 2B, HR, BB, 2 R, 3 RBI). While he had the second-worst average of the starters, he was third in slugging, tied Aaron Hornostaj for second in RBI and tied for the most extra-base hits. He did have two passed balls and an error, though, in five games. His two-run homer off Ben Van Nuffel put Britain ahead, 7-6, over Belgium, but Belgium rallied for a 10-7 win. Playing 3B for Britain in the 2012 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, Wiley batted .333, with two hits versus the Czech Republic (Jan Blažek, Marek Minařík) and one versus Canada's Chris Kissock. He tied B.J. Hubbert for second on the team in hits, trailing Albert Cartwright.

Wiley again played 3B for Britain in the 2013 European Championship Qualifer and had an excellent tournament, leading the Zurich pool in RBIs and runs scored (8 each) and batting .381 (8 for 21). He scored four runs against host Switzerland, drove in three versus Slovenia and scored the first run in the 2-0 win over Ukraine in the finals, singling off Kostyantyn Korolov and coming home on a double by Brett Rosen. His brother Zack Wiley joined him on the team that year.
