Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Sam McWilliams was an 8th-round selection by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2014 amateur draft, out of high school. The scout was Nate Dion.

He made his professional debut that season with the GCL Phillies, going 2-3, 5.40 in 9 games, including 5 starts, logging 25 innings. In 2015, he went 0-2 with the same team, his ERA going down to 3.27 in 7 starts and 33 innings. Still considered a long shot to make the majors, he was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks on November 14th straight-up for veteran P Jeremy Hellickson, in a deal that was designed to allow the D-Backs to save some salary money. He spent 2016 and 2017 in the Diamondbacks' organization, lining up with the Kane County Cougars of the Midwest League both years. he was 3-6, 3.98 in 15 starts the first year, and a solid 11-6, 2.84 in 25 starts in 2017. On May 1, 2018, he was one of two players to be named later sent to the Tampa Bay Rays to complete a spring training trade for Steven Souza. He had started the year with the Visalia Rawhide of the California League, where he was 1-1, 2.10 in 5 starts at the time of the trade.
