Biographical Information[edit]
Salvador Paniagua was signed by the Boston Red Sox in 2001 and played in their minor league system until 2007. He played his final two years of affiliated ball in the New York Mets organization from 2008-2009. In both organizations he reached AA. Primarily a catcher, Paniagua hit .250/.290/.427 in his six minor league seasons. He helped the Tigres del Licey win the 2009 Caribbean Series, launching a two-run homer in the 4-2 win in the finale. After 2009, Paniagua continued his playing career in the independent leagues until retiring after the 2016 season.
The Pittsburgh Pirates hired Paniagua in 2017 to coach in their minor league system. He was a coach for the Bristol Pirates in 2017, a hitting coach for the DSL Pirates 1 in 2018, and a coach for the Altoona Curve in 2019. Paniagua was scheduled to coach the Greensboro Grasshoppers in 2020 before the minor league season was cancelled due to COVID-19.
Paniagua left the Pirates in 2021 for a bench coach position with the Rocky Mountain Vibes in the Colorado Rockies chain. After one year with the Rockies, he joined the Detroit Tigers player development staff as a first time manager. He managed the DSL Tigers 2 in 2022 before serving as bench coach for the FCL Tigers in 2023. He then managed the FCL Tigers in 2024.
