Biographical Information[edit]
Ryan Rupp has pitched for the Austrian national team.
Rupp did not pitch in college but did well in local sandlot leagues and that got him thinking he had the potential to play pro ball. He had dual citizenship with Austria as his father was from there and had once attended a baseball game on a visit to family in the country. [1] He went to play in the Austrian minors in 2013, while working in his uncle's flour mill, building his strength. [2] Possessing dual citizenship, he also pitched for the national team, starting with the 2015 B-Level European Championship. Relieving Felix Zimmerle in the third inning of a blowout loss to Israel, he worked 5 2/3 IP (7 H, 7 BB, 6 K, 4 R). [3]
In 2016, his Austrian team made it to the Austrian Baseball League, the top tier of play. He won the Best Pitcher Award for the Athletics Attnang-Puchheim in 2017, when he was 10-0 with a 1.60 ERA and hit .478/.552/.739 to boot. He led the league in ERA (.04 ahead of Christian Tomsich), was 2nd with a .164 opponent average (behind former AA hurler Chris Squires), was 3rd in IP (90), ranked 4th in K (93) and led in wins. Had he qualified, he would have been 3rd in average and 5th in slugging. [4] He also won Playoff MVP. [5] He was 0-1 with a 12.86 ERA in the 2017 Federations Cup, getting lit up by Belgium's Borgerhout Squirrels. [6] When Austria won the 2017 B-Level European Championship, he did much better against Israel (8 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, 7 K, 2 R, 1 ER) before Clemens Cichocki relieved; Cichocki got the win. [7]
The lefty had a 4-1, 2.72 record in 2018, finishing 5th in ERA. [8] Austria met Lithuania in the 2018 European Championship Playoff with a spot in the 2019 European Championship at stake. He won Game 2 to complete the sweep, going 4 1/3 IP (6 H, 3 BB, 4 K, 3 R, 3 ER) to beat Eimantas Zickus. [9]
Moving to the Dornbirn Indians in '19, he was 6-2 with a save and 3.28 ERA, fanning 77 in 74 innings. He was 8th in ERA and opponent average (.234), 6th in IP, tied for 6th in K and tied for 2nd in wins (behind Rusty Thompson). [10] He heat Per Sjörs and the Leksand Lumberjacks in the 2019 Federations Cup, fanning 14 in a complete game (6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 BB). He was third in the event in ERA behind Pavao Karin and Thompson, 2nd in opponent average (.176, behind Karin) and third in whiffs. [11] In the 2019 European Championship, he got the start against France and lost against Dan Camou; he went five innings (5 H, 5 BB, 4 K, 9 R, 8 ER) before Fabian Hirnschal relieved. [12]
In 2020, he was 4 for 9 with a walk, run and two RBI and 5-1 with a save and a 2.42 ERA. He was 6th in ERA, 5th in IP (52), 3rd in K (73, behind Tobias Kiefer and Heorhii Hvrytishvili), tied Thierry Letouzé for 2nd in wins (one behind Kiefer). [13] In two playoff games, he was 1-1 with a 1.69 ERA and 30 K in 16 IP. He finished 5th in ERA and second to Kiefer in ERA. [14]
