Biographical Information

Ryan Murphy is a player in Hoofdklasse who has been both regular season and Holland Series MVP.

In 2005, Murphy had a 8.31 ERA in four games for the Edmonton Cracker-Cats, allowing 15 hits in 8 2/3 IP. In 2006, he pitched for France's Savigny Lions. He moved on to the Netherlands, signing with the MediaMonks RCH for 2007. He was 6-6 with a save and a 2.64 ERA on the hill and sparkled at the plate, batting .365/.444/.532. He tied MVP Fausto Álvarez for 4th in average, was 3rd in slugging (behind Álvarez and Roel Koolen), was 8th in OBP, tied for 5th in homers (3), tied for 2nd in triples (3), was 17th in ERA, tied Kenny Berkenbosch for 7th in wins, led in innings (112 2/3), led in complete games (6), tied for 4th in strikeouts (65) and tied Nelson Santander for the most shutouts (2).

Murphy moved to the L&D Amsterdam Pirates for 2008. He hit .309/.402/.400 as a corner infielder when not pitching. On the mound, he went 5-5 with 3 saves and a 3.89 ERA. He tied Alex Smith for the lead with 4 complete games. In the playoffs, he was just 1 for 12 and had a 5.40 ERA but then he came alive in the 2008 Holland Series. Against favored Kinheim, he went 4 for 6 with 2 walks, a homer, 2 runs and 3 RBI in games one and two. In game 3, he allowed 2 hits and no runs (walking 4) in 6 innings for the win as the Pirates pulled off a sweep for their first Holland Series in 21 years. Murphy won MVP honors for his two-way display.

He signed with the Pioniers for 2009 and had another huge season. He hit .312/.404/.420 with 30 RBI in 42 games and was 10-2 with a 0.89 ERA, allowing only 69 hits and 15 walks in 110 2/3 IP. He surrendered only one home run and struck out 104. He led the league's first basemen with a .991 fielding percentage. He tied Bryan Engelhardt for 5th in RBI, tied for 5th in doubles (11), tied Fausto Alvarez for 10th in walks (28) and tied Sidney de Jong and Jason Rees for 8th in hits (48). On the mound, he led in ERA (.02 ahead of Rob Cordemans), was second in opponent average (.178, behind Dushan Ruzic), was second in WHIP (behind Ruzic), tied for the win lead (with Kevin Heijstek and Diegomar Markwell), led in innings, led in complete games (5), led in strikeouts (one over Cordemans) and tied for the shutout lead (3, even with Heijstek and David Bergman). In the playoffs, he he had a 1-1, 3.07 record. Then in the 2009 Holland Series, Murphy was a shadow of his 2008 Holland Series self, going 0-1 with 8 runs and 10 hits in 6 innings and 2 hits in 11 at-bats at the plate. He also made 2 errors in the field as the Pioniers fell to DOOR Neptunus. He was named MVP and Pitcher of the Year of the 2009 Hoofdklasse, though, the first player to take home both honors since Frans Groot in 1991. For MVP, he beat out former major leaguer Eugene Kingsale and former AA player Danny Rombley in the voting.

Murphy signed with the Brother Elephants in Taiwan for 2010. He allowed four runs in 3 1/3 IP on March 21st and was released to make room on the roster for Orlando Roman.
