Crew hit .313 as a college freshman, winning Southland Conference Freshman of the Year honors. He batted .310 the next year and was named All-SLC at shortstop. As a junior, he improved to .374, second in the SLC behind Bubba Bell and was named MVP of the 2005 Southland Conference Tournament. The Milwaukee Brewers took him in the 40th round of the 2005 amateur draft.

He kicked off his pro career very well, batting .346/.402/.498 with 45 runs in 58 games for the 2005 Helena Brewers. He was fourth in the Pioneer League in average. Crew played well in 2006 for the West Virginia Power (.280/.349/.379) and the Brevard County Manatees (.296/.372/.377), hitting 26 doubles and stealing 13 bases in 18 tries between the two stops.
