Biographical Information[edit]

Ryan Christenson played college ball at Pepperdine University where he was the West Coast Conference Player of the Year in his final season after leading the league with a .376 batting average. The Oakland Athletics drafted him in the 10th round of the 1995 Amateur Draft. Christenson gradually rose through their minor league system and made his major league debut in 1998. He was a bit player for the A's between 1998 and 2000, routinely playing more than 100 games and gradually phasing into a defensive replacement. He split the ensuing three seasons with four different teams, finishing with a career batting average of .222 in 452 major league games. Christenson played a final season in 2004 with the AAA Albuquerque Isotopes.

In 2013, he returned to the A's organization as a minor league manager. Christenson worked his way up the minor league ladder, rung by rung. Christenson's first four teams all finished a minimum of 15 games over .500 and reached the playoffs. In recognition of his efforts, Christenson was named the California League (2014) and Texas League (2016) Manager of the Year. Over five seasons, his teams had a 391-307 (.560) record.

Christenson joined the major league staff in 2018 as the team's bench coach where he remained through 2021. When Bob Melvin was named manager of the San Diego Padres for the 2022 season, Christenson accompanied him to San Diego as Melvin's bench coach. In 2023 his title changed to associate manager. Christenson moved with Melvin again in 2024, this time to work as the San Francisco Giants bench coach. He retained this role in 2025.
