Biographical Information

Second baseman Ryan Brett reached the majors for a cup of coffee in 2015.

Brett was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the third round of the 2010 amateur draft, a couple picks ahead of catcher Rob Brantly and a few picks after pitchers Tyler Thornburg and Addison Reed. Hitting for a solid average, he posted a line of .303/.364/.404, along with 12 steals, in his first campaign with the GCL Rays in 2010, then a mark of .300/.370/.471 with 21 steals with the Princeton Rays in 2011. In 2012, with the Bowling Green Hot Rods, he hit .285/.348/.393 with 48 swipes, earning a spot on the Midwest League midseason and postseason All-Star teams. He hit .302/.356/.454 with 26 steals between the GCL Rays, Charlotte Stone Crabs and Montgomery Biscuits in 2013. He began 2014 with Montgomery and hit .303 with 27 steals and 64 runs scored, to earn a spot on the Southern League midseason All-Star squad.

Brett began the 2015 campaign with the Durham Bulls but was called up to the bigs in mid-April. He made his debut on April 18th, going 0-for-1 with a walk against the New York Yankees. He made his first start at second base on April 21st in a game against the Boston Red Sox, but had to leave with a shoulder injury in the 3rd inning; he dislocated the shoulder diving pack to first base on a pick-off throw. Brett had collected his first career hit two days earlier, a double off Andrew Miller of the Yankees, after entering as a defensive substitute. Just like that, Brett's big league career was over. He was non-tendered by the Rays after 2015 and missed the entire 2016 season with an elbow injury. The Rays brought him back on a minors pact for 2017, after which he became a minor league free agent. He spent time in the Chicago White Sox system in 2018, then moved to the independent American Association, first with the Kansas City T-Bones and later with the Cleburne Railroaders.
