Biographical information

Ronald Uviedo pitched as high as AAA.

Uviedo was signed by scout Luis Martinez for the Seattle Mariners at age 16. He debuted for Aguirre (VSL) in the Venezuelan Summer League in 2004, going 2-1 with a 5.81 ERA. Ronald improved to 4-3, 2.76 for VSL Mariners in his second VSL season, allowing only a .193 average. Let go by Seattle, he was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Uviedo debuted with the Bucco organization in 2006 with the VSL Pirates, going 2-0 with 11 saves and a 2.02 ERA. He led the VSL in saves and was named to the All-Star team. In 2007, he was 2-0 with 12 saves and a 3.92 ERA for the State College Spikes, fanning 26 in 20 2/3 IP; he also made brief appearances with the Hickory Crawdads and Lynchburg Hillcats. He was fifth in the New York-Penn League in saves and tied for 3rd among Pirate minor leaguers in saves.

The right-hander split 2008 between Hickory (3-1, 5 Sv, 3.01, 76 K in 71 2/3 IP) and Lynchburg (5 hits, 4 runs in 16 IP). He was 2-2 with a 3.10 ERA in 22 games that winter for the Leones del Caracas. Uviedo was 5-5 with 3 saves and a 3.36 ERA for the 2009 Lynchburg Hillcats; he was 0-1 with a 3.24 ERA on a rehab stint with the GCL Pirates. He returned to the Leones that winter.

He began 2010 with the Altoona Curve in the Pirates organization and did very well, going 0-2 with a 3.22 ERA and .165 opponent average after 16 games, with 28 strikeouts in 22 1/3 innings. On June 1, he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays for Dana Eveland, who had an ERA over 6 in the majors; the move was largely panned by Pirates fans. Neither he nor Eveland would work out for their new teams. Uviedo fell to 5-3 with a save and a 5.31 ERA for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats following the deal. He was 4-2 with a 2.39 ERA for the Leones that winter, walking only 10 in 64 1/3 IP. He was 5th in the Venezuelan League in ERA, between Yusmeiro Petit and Yorman Bazardo.

Uviedo split 2011 between New Hampshire (3-1, Sv, 4.29 in 26 G) and the Las Vegas 51s (1-0, 4.74 in 24 G), striking out 82 in 73 2/3 IP. He tied Matt Wright for 5th in the Jays chain in games pitched. He fell to 1-0, 5.50 for Caracas in 2011-2012. In the summer of 2012, he pitched for the Fisher Cats (5-3, 7 Sv, 2.97 in 43 G) and 51s (3 R in 6 IP) again. He tied for 7th in the Jays chain in pitching appearances. He was 0-1 with two saves and a 5.93 ERA that winter with Caracas.

A free agent, he moved on to the independent leagues in 2013, appearing for the Southern Illinois Miners (1-0, 7 Sv, 2.79 in 17 G) and Camden Riversharks (2 R in 1 IP). He was 2-1 with a 4.03 ERA in 31 games that winter for the Leones, second in the Venezuelan League in pitching outings. He next signed with Padova BSC in the Italian Baseball League. He started their opener but allowed 6 hits, a walk and four runs (two earned) in five innings in a loss to T&A San Marino, outdueled by fellow Venezuelan Junior Guerra.
