Rochester Maroons

From BR Bullpen

In 1886, the New York State League became the International League and its Rochester, NY team changed names as well, from the Rochester Flour Cities to the Rochester Maroons. Managed by Frank Bancroft and Lon Knight, Rochester finished second in the first IL season, five and a half games behind the Utica Pentups at 56-39. Jersey Bakely (18-13, 1.37), Charlie Parsons (15-10, 1.12) and Jack Horner (14-8, 1.59) provided the pitching, while three players hit .300 - 1B Doc Kennedy (.341, a league-best 32 doubles), SS Ed McKean (.305, 29 SB) and OF-C Joe Visner (.312, a league-high 8 homers, 87 runs, 10 triples). Rochester's 534 runs were only 6th of 8 IL teams but their 1.29 ERA led the league.

The next season, the Maroons were managed by John Humphries and fell to 49-52 and 7th place, 16 games back. With walks being counted as hits, Kennedy hit .375 and ex-major-leaguer Fred Lewis batted .406 with 87 runs in 82 games. 2B Jimmy Knowles batted .370, stole 54 bases and slugged .543. Bakely (21-21, 2.56) led the IL in losses.

When the IL became the International Association in 1888, they were renamed the Rochester Jingoes.
