Biographical Information

Doc Kennedy was a catcher who played five years in the major leagues, with almost all of his games coming in the first three years. In 1879, when he made his debut with the Cleveland Blues, he was already 25 years old (the team average was 24), and he had the highest batting average among the regulars. The team as a whole hit .223.

He did much worse in his second year with the Blues, in 1880, with a .200 average that was the worst among the regulars. The following year, 1881, although he appeared in only 39 games, his batting average was second highest on the team.

He was involved as a catcher in a 5-4*-3*-2* triple play on June 10, 1879. He was on the team against whom Lee Richmond pitched the first perfect game in 1879.

He umpired one National League game in 1884, and two in the American League in 1910.
