Ricky Barrett will pitch in Japan in 2009.
Barrett was an All-State pitcher in high school in 1998 and 1999. In 2001, he ws 9-3 with a 3.19 ERA, 5th in the West Coast Conference; he had All-Conference honors. In 2002, he went 10-2 with a save and a 3.61 ERA and led the WCC in both wins and strikeouts (98). He was named the WCC Pitcher of the Year.
The southpaw was taken in the 7th round of the 2002 amateur draft by the Minnesota Twins. He was excellent for the Elizabethton Twins in 2002, going 7-1 with a 1.27 ERA and striking out 79 in 63 2/3 IP and allowing a .218 average. He led the Appalachian League in ERA and was second in strikeouts, behind Scott Tyler. He was the Appy's All-Star left-handed pitcher and split Pitcher of the Year honors with Anthony Lerew. Baseball America rated him the #15 prospect in the league.
Ricky only got into 3 games for Quad Cities in 2003 before tearing the labrum in his left shoulder. He missed over 3 months and returned to pitch 5 games on a rehab stint with the GCL Twins. Barrett started 2004 with Quad Cities and was 2-1 with a 2.77 ERA and .212 average allowed in 13 games. He was promoted to the Fort Myers Miracle, where he was converted to relief. He was 5-1 with a 2.07 ERA and .204 average in 17 games.
Barrett started 2005 with the New Britain Rock Cats and starred (1-0, 0.51, 27 K in 17 2/3 IP), earning him a quick promotion to the Rochester Red Wings. There, he had his first struggles as a pro, going 4-4 with a 6.71 ERA. In 63 innings, he allowed 70 hits (10 homers) and 48 walks. He went 0-3 with a 9.00 ERA for the Grand Canyon Rafters, walking over a batter per inning.
Barrett was 5-1 with a save and a 3.42 ERA for Rochester in 2006, allowing a .191 average in 47 1/3 IP. In 2007, he had a 2-1, 4.11 record with a save for Rochester and fanned 34 in 30 2/3 IP. He missed time due to a left elbow strain and back strain. In his 4th year at Rochester, 2008, Ricky had a 3.21 ERA in 50 games, going 4-5 with 2 saves. He fanned 81 and allowed 55 hits in 70 innings.
Barrett signed a 50-million yen contract with the Tokyo Yakult Swallows for 2009 with a team option for 2010. He debuted on April 15 with two shutout relief innings against the Yokohama BayStars.,
