Relief pitcher Richie Lentz played in the Boston Red Sox system from 2007 to 2009. He was taken by the club in the 19th round of the 2006 amateur draft, one pick after outfielder Chris Pettit. He was signed by scout John Booher.

He average 9.6 K/9 IP in 31 appearances for the Greenville Drive his first campaign, but also averaged 7.7 BB/9 IP, walking 42 men in 49 innings. Between two clubs in 2008, he was 5-5 with a 3.14 ERA, striking out 112 batters -- but walking 43 -- in 77 1/3 innings over 44 games. He was a California League Mid-Season All-Star that year. In 2009, he was 3-0 with a 5.98 mark in 38 appearances between two teams. He averaged 13.4 K/9 IP and 7.1 walks per 9 frames. He was selected for the Arizona Fall League that year, posting a 4.11 ERA and 9.4 K/9 ratio in 10 appearances for the Mesa Solar Sox. Overall, he was 8-6 with a 4.19 ERA in 113 regular season appearances. In 176 innings, he allowed 140 hits and struck out 238, while walking 124 batters.

His father, Mike Lentz, played professionally in the 1970s. His brother, Ryan Lentz, played in the minors in the 1990s and early 2000s. Another brother, Andy Lentz, played at the University of Washington.
