Biographical Information

Outfielder Rex Goodson was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the first round of the 1970 amateur draft with the eighth overall pick, between Randy Scarbery and Jim Haller. The four position players drafted ahead of him all reached the majors but Goodson peaked at AA.

He played four years in the Royals organization. In his pro debut with the Kingsport Royals, he hit .252/.339/.410 with 8 home runs in 55 games. He tied Tom Poquette and Terrence Jones for third in the Appalachian League in home runs but led the league with 69 strikeouts. He produced at a .277/.378/.416 clip for the 1971 Waterloo Royals, with 13 steals in 17 tries.

With the 1972 San Jose Bees, Goodson batted .315/.403/.402 and finished among the California League leaders in average (3rd, behind Glenn Monroe and Bob Randall, OBP (5th, between Sergio Ferrer and Steve Staggs), steals (24, 8th between Candy Harris and Greg Harts) and walks (64, 10th). He was named to the league All-Star outfield, joining Jim Dwyer and William O'Connor. He split 1973 between Waterloo (.224/.281/.259 in 21 G) and Jacksonville Suns (.187/.261/.201 in 38 G) to end his career. Overall, he batted .274/.362/.372 in 299 games as a pro, with 168 runs, 17 homers, 121 RBI and 48 steals in 62 attempts.
