Biographical Information

Catcher Red Kleinow spent most of his major league career with the New York Highlanders at a time when the team's performance fluctuated wildly. In the period from 1904-1910, the team was second in the American League three times, but was also under .500 four times, losing 103 games in 1908.

Kleinow was six years younger than Willie Keeler, who was on the Highlanders with him from 1904 to 1909.

Red was the first major leaguer out of St. Edward's University, where he attended in 1901. In 1902 and 1903 he was with the Toledo Mud Hens.

His New York Times obituary called him Jack Kleinow and said he had finished his professional baseball career with the Baltimore Orioles in 1912.

A May 2008 SABR article quotes a monument which states that Kleinow and Addie Joss played on Watertown's Sacred Heart team in 1899, winning a college championship. Claude Elliott was also on the team.
