Biographical Information[edit]

Randy Putman played three seasons in the minors then became a successful junior college coach.

Putman was undrafted out of college. He hit .249/.302/.370 for the 1977 GCL Royals, driving in 28 runs in 52 games. He tied Blake Lorenz for 7th in the Gulf Coast League in RBI. In 1978, he moved to the San Diego Padres chain and from outfield to first base. He batted .269/.376/.439 with 10 homers, 42 RBI, 43 walks and 61 runs in 67 games for the Walla Walla Padres. He was 4th in the Northwest League in runs scored, 6th in homers, 7th in walks and led first basemen in errors (15) and double plays (49). Emil Drzayich was the NWL All-Star first baseman. Randy slumped in 1979 with the Reno Silver Sox and Santa Clara Padres, hitting a combined .228/.340/.293 with four homers and 70 walks in 127 games. He ended his pro career with a .245/.344/.355 batting line, 137 runs, 18 homers, 118 RBI and 128 walks in 246 games. While not a prolific base-stealer (15 SB), he was almost never caught (2 CS).

Putman was 152-28 as coach of J. M. Tate High School, developing Jay Bell and Travis Fryman. He then became head coach of Wallace State College in 1990; he was 890-367 entering 2014 and had coached Craig Kimbrel, Derek Holland, Jake Elmore, Terry Jones and Graham Godfrey. Putman reached 1,100 wins in February 2020.
