Santa Clara Padres

From BR Bullpen

Through 2006, just one professional baseball team has played in Santa Clara, CA. They were the Santa Clara Padres, a co-op team in the 1979 California League. The Padres finished last in both halves and overall at 47-93 under manager Joe Volpi. Attendance finished at 19,952, the lowest number in the league. The Seattle Mariners, Oakland A's, San Diego Padres, and California Angels all supplied a number of players, while the St. Louis Cardinals chipped in. Ron Tingley went on to the majors as a player, while Joe Maddon went as a coach and manager. Julian Gutierrrez (Cards) finished 10th in the batting race.
