Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Ranbir Grewal was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 26th round of the 1990 amateur draft, out of Fresno State University. That made him one of the earliest players of Indian background to ever be drafted by a major league team.

For a low draft choice, he had some pretty good success in his first few seasons as a pro. Used almost exclusively in relief, he went 0-3, 2.72 with 3 saves for the Jamestown Expos of the New York-Penn League in 1990, then an excellent 11-2, 2.89 with 5 saves in 49 games in 1991. That even included a couple of appearances in AAA for the Indianapolis Indians of the American Association, although the bulk of his season was spent with the Rockford Expos of the Midwest League. He tied Miguel Batista, Dan Freed and Chris Pollack for 4th in the Expos system in wins. In 1992, he pitched for the West Palm Beach Expos of the Florida State League, going 3-6, 3.86 in 42 games, but once again was brought up to Indianapolis to help out for a brief stint, this time making one start. However, that outing did not go well as he allowed 4 runs in 1 2/3 innings. A bigger issue was his poor K/W ratio - 32/21 in 49 innings at West Palm Beach.

Ranbir was let go by the Expos after the 1992 season and continued his career with two more seasons in the nascent independent leagues, both with the St. Paul Saints of the Northern League. He was 5-5, 3.86 as a starter in 1993, and 2-2, 4.55 mostly as a reliever in 1994.

After baseball, he returned to his hometown of Madera, CA where he went into the fruit growing business with his brother.
