After the 1996 season, the Piedmont Phillies were renamed the Piedmont Boll Weevils. After the 2000 season, NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt (nicknamed "The Intimidator") became a part-owner in the club, and the team was renamed the Kannapolis Intimidators in his honor.
