Biographical Information[edit]

Patrick Maat has played in Australia, the US and Germany.

Maat was signed by the New York Mets in 2006. He made his pro debut in the 2007 Claxton Shield, going 4 for 16 with 3 homers, 4 walks and 5 RBI in five games for the Australian Provincials. He played DH as Michael Collins was the main catcher. The big backstop led the event in home runs, one ahead of Matthew Kent. He made his US debut that summer with the GCL Mets, hitting .190/.352/.238 and having more passed balls (13) than runs produced (7) in 19 games. Back in Australia, he hit .361 and slugged .694 with 11 RBI in 11 games in the 2008 Claxton Shield. He tied Luke Hughes and Stefan Welch for the most doubles (6), tied for 4th in RBI and was 5th in slugging.

He had more troubles back in America, though. In 2008, he was 0 for 6 for the Kingsport Mets and 2 for 10 with a double and two walks for the GCL Mets to finish his minor league career with a .179/.324/.232 batting line, four runs and four RBI in 25 games. With New South Wales in the 2009 Claxton Shield, he batted .333/.452/.451 with 10 walks in 15 games. He was 6th in Australia in average, 5th in OBP and tied for fourth in walks.

Let go by the Mets, he continued to shine in his homeland. He hit .390/.446/.573 with 19 RBI in 23 games for New South Wales in the 2009/2010 Claxton Shield. He was 4th in average (between Mitch Dening and Josh Davies), 4th in slugging (between Dening and Matthew Lawman), 5th in OBP and tied for second in RBI (with Collins and Davies, four shy of Tim Kennelly). He signed with Germany's HSV Stealers for 2010. He was 1 for 8 in a doubleheader against the Dortmund Wanderers on Opening Day. Used both at catcher and in the outfield, he hit .309/.426/.515 with 18 RBI in 28 games. He tied Michael Franke and Evan Porter for 5th in homers in the Bundesliga-1 north (4), tied for 5th in doubles (8), tied for 4th in walks (19), was 8th in slugging and 9th in OPS. He threw out 41.7% of attempted base-stealers, good for second.

The Australian Baseball League was revived for 2010-2011 and Maat hit just .196/.281/.284 for the Sydney Blue Sox that season, with 30 strikeouts in 102 AB. He was much better - .295/.336/.482, 20 RBI in 2011-2012. He did not play in the ABL in the next couple seasons, seemingly indicating his career is over.
