Biographical Information[edit]

Pai-Sheng Cheng played in the CPBL and for the Chinese Taipei national baseball team.

Cheng represented Taiwan in the 1984 Haarlemse Honkbalweek, 1984 Amateur World Series (hitting .270/.349/.405 while fielding .983 at 1B; his five walks tied for the team lead), 1985 Asian Championship, 1985 Intercontinental Cup, 1987 Asian Championship and 1987 Intercontinental Cup. The Uni-President Lions signed Cheng when they were founded in 1990. Although he was already 30 years old when he turned pro, Cheng still batted well in the 1990 season. He recorded a .305/.372/.356 batting line with 22 RBI. Cheng hit .262/.317/.337 in 1991, and participated in the All-Star Game for the first time in his career. Cheng was famous for his first base defense but the CPBL Gold Glove award was not introduced until 1993. The Kaohsiung native extended his stable performance, hitting .240/.301/.288 in 1992, and .265/.340/.331 in 1993. The elite leadoff hitter collected a career-high 15 doubles and a .262/.319/.332 batting line in 1994, and was selected into the All-Star Game again. Cheng hit .239/.306/.279 in the next year, and recorded a .289/.362/.329 in 1996 season. After that season, Cheng was banned by the league because of a gambling scandal.

Overall, Cheng had hit .266/.331/.321 in seven seasons in the CPBL.
