Team History[edit]

The Ozark Mountain Ducks were the first minor league team from Springfield, MO since 1909; they also represented Ozark, MO. Formed in 1999 in the Texas-Louisiana League, they led in attendance at 154,752 but went only 32-50 to finish 5th of 7 teams. They had three All-Stars in C Brent Bubela (.315/.386/.498), OF Sergio Cairo (.352/.419/.507; part of the year spent with Rio Grande Valley) and P Mike Smith (10-7, 3.94), a former major leaguer who finished 5th in ERA. In 2000, they were 59-53 for skipper Barry Jones to improve to 4th and again led in attendance (202,375). Their All-Stars were both pitchers, Smith (12-11, 3.41, a league-best 223 K) and Jim Wollscheid (14-5, 2.83, 2nd in the league in ERA). Cairo (.316/.414/.535, 14 HR) led the offense. They became the Springfield/Ozark Mountain Ducks in 2001.
