He played eight seasons in the minor leagues with the Indians (1990-1996) and Houston Astros (1999-2001), reaching the triple-A level in both organizations. He spent 1997 playing in Mexico and 1998 playing for the Rio Grande Valley White Wings of the independent Texas-Louisiana League. After leaving the Astros, he played in Mexico through the 2007 season. During the minor league portion of his career, Ramirez hit .279/.353/.382 while appearing in 816 games.
Following his playing career, Ramirez joined the Kansas City Royals organization as a coach and manager. He started 2008 as a coach for the Burlington Royals but took over hitting coach responsibilities in early August when Patrick Anderson left to coach at Hofstra University. Ramirez was the hitting coach for the Burlington Bees in 2009-2010 and the Idaho Falls Chukars in 2011. Since then he has managed various teams in the Royals player development system. He was scheduled to manage the ACL Royals Blue team in 2020 before COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the minor league season.
