Biographical Information[edit]

Nobuo Nakatani pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 9 years.

Nakatani was signed by the Nankai Hawks in 1947, and he was 15-18 with a 2.40 ERA in his rookie year. He was 6th in strikeouts in the Japanese Professional Baseball League, between Giichiro Shiraki and Tadayoshi Kajioka. Nakatani then improved to 21-12 with a 1.98 ERA in 1948, ranking 3rd in ERA (between Susumu Yuki and Takehiko Bessho), 7th in wins (6 behind Hiroshi Nakao and Tokuji Kawasaki) and 8th in strikeouts (between Bessho and Tsuguhiro Hattori). Nakatani slumped to 12-19 with a 4.26 ERA in 1949, and he led the league in losses and runs allowed.

The Kyoto native was 13-7 with a 3.97 ERA in 1950, then he improved to 14-2 with a 2.44 ERA in 1951. Nakatani led the Pacific League (the JPBL had split into two leagues in 1950) with his .875 winning percentage, and he also ranked 5th in wins (between Fumio Takechi and Takeshi Nomura) and 7th in ERA (between Atsushi Aramaki and Nomura]]. He was 7-8 with a 3.57 ERA in 1952, then he went 4-8 with a 3.83 ERA in 1953. Nakatani only pitched 10 more games in the next two seasons, and he announced his retirement after the 1955 season.

Overall, Nakatani was 90-76 with a 3.05 ERA, struck out 577 and pitched 1,500 innings in 9 years in NPB.
