Nikolai Petrov
- Bats Left, Throws Right
Biographical Information[edit]
Nikolai Petrov played for the Russian national team. It is unclear if he was related to contemporary Vladimir Petrov.
Nikolai allowed 13 hits in 25 at-bats in the 1998 Baseball World Cup, giving up 11 runs (10 earned) in 3 2/3 IP over four outings. He led Russia in appearances. [1] In the 1999 European Championship, he was 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA, beating Geoff Williams and Great Britain. [2] He was 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA in the 2001 European Championship; only Alexei Valialine had a better ERA for Russia, which finished second, their best to date (2023). He dueled long-time Dutch star Rob Cordemans evenly, beating Erik Remmerswaal after Cordemans left; he allowed only three runs in eight innings against a lineup featuring MLB vet Ralph Milliard and former minor leaguers Gino Henson and Harvey Monte. Iouri Jirov closed out his win, perhaps the biggest in Russian baseball history (again as of 2023). [3] In the 2001 Baseball World Cup, the right-hander was 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA; only Artour Donetski was higher for Russia. He lost to champion Cuba and Ciro Licea and to Patrick Beljaards and the Netherlands; this time, the Dutch attack had two former major leaguers and five others with minor league experience. Only Darryn Smith had more losses in the Cup. [4]
