Biographical Information[edit]

Vladimir Petrov has pitched for the Russian national team several times, including their three Baseball World Cup appearances.

Petrov was on the first Russian squad to play in a European Championship. In the 1995 European Championship, the 22-year-old led the staff with four games and had a 4.15 ERA. In 13 innings, he walked 13 but struck out 19 to tie Alexandre Bogatyrev for the team lead. He was 6th in opponent average (.188) in the event, tied for third in strikeouts and tied for second in walks.

Vladimir was also on the first Russian team in a Baseball World Cup. In the 1998 Baseball World Cup, the southpaw was 0-1 with a 14.04 ERA, giving up an unhealthy five home runs in 8 1/3 IP. During the 1999 European Championship, he walked 9 in 6 1/3 IP and was 0-2 with a 7.11 ERA.

In the 2001 European Championship, he had a 1-0, 4.02 record with one save as Russia won a Silver Medal for its best finish ever. During the 2001 Baseball World Cup, the left-hander walked 10 in 12 2/3 IP (a team high, just ahead of minor leaguer Oleg Korneev) and was 0-2. His 5.68 ERA led the team's pitchers, though.

Petrov went 0-2 with a 5.02 ERA in the 2003 European Championship. In the 2003 Baseball World Cup, the veteran had a 8.44 ERA; only Alexey Valyalin had a lower ERA for a weak Russian staff. Petrov outpitched Korneev. He had a 2.35 ERA but no decisions in the 2005 European Championship as he got little support against Sweden and Greece.

Petrov started for Tornado Balashika against the Mainz Athletics of Germany in the 2008 European Cup. He gave up 10 hits and 5 runs in 5 2/3 IP but still got the win over Nils Hartkopf.

Vladimir coached for Russia in the 2009 World Youth Championship.
