Biographical Information[edit]
Mitchell Hillert has pitched in the Bundesliga-1 and for the Irish national team.
The New Yorker was 3-3 with a 3.00 ERA for Concordia College in 2013 then fell to 0-3 with a save and a 5.67 ERA as a sophomore. He rebounded to 2-2, 4.25 as a junior and 2-5, 3.77 as a senior. He then spent two years in the Empire Professional League, going 4-3 with a 4.91 ERA for the 2017 Puerto Rican Islanders and 1-2, 4.00 for the 2018 New Hampshire Wild. [1] He retired all eight batters he faced for Ireland in the 2018 C-Level European Championship, half by strikeout. [2]
Holding an Irish passport, he did not count as a foreign player for import limits in the German Bundesliga. Signing with the Mannheim Tornadoes, he was 2-3 with a 3.12 ERA in 2019 then had a 3.38 ERA and no decisions in two playoff outings. [3] He allowed nine hits, three walks and five runs (three earned) while fanning four in four innings in the 2019 B-Level European Championship, losing to Denis Leonov and Russia. [4] With Mannheim in 2020, he went 2-1 with a 5.48 ERA and fanned 28 in 21 1/3 IP. He was 2-1 with a 1.02 ERA in the postseason. [5]
In 2021, he was 2-2 with two saves and a 3.38 ERA for the Regensburg Legionäre, whiffing 39 in 29 1/3 IP and tying for the Bundesliga-1 South lead in saves. [6] He beat Alex Ogg and Hungary in the 2021 European Championship Qualifier, fanning 13 in 6 hitless innings (2 BB) before Patrick Mitchell closed it out. He was second in the Bratislava event in ERA (teammate Keelan Smithers was at 0.00 in 7 IP), obviously allowed the lowest average (.048 ahead of Smithers) and was third in strikeouts (behind Jakub Ižold and Smithers).
