Biographical Information[edit]

Minoru Yano pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 14 years.

Yano was drafted by the Nankai Hawks in the third round of the 1981 NPB draft, but he spent his first season primarily in the NPB Farm Leagues, only pitching 2 games with the big club. He joined their bullpen in 1983, and he had a 4.34 ERA in 37 games. Yano then struggled in 1984 as his ERA rose to 5.11 in 29 games, then he recorded a 4.37 ERA in 40 games in 1985. He collected 3 saves with a 4.09 ERA in 41 games in 1986, then he improved to a 3.43 ERA in 31 games in 1987. Yano led the Pacific League with 57 appearances in 1988, and his ERA was 3.30.

The Hyogo native then had a 4.37 ERA in 50 appearances in 1989, and he ranked 2nd in games pitched (7 behind Yuji Inoue). He was 3th in appearances (between Takahide Ito and Masato Yoshii) in 1990, and his ERA was 4.39. The Hawks then traded him to the Orix BlueWave for Yutaro Imai, but his ERA rose to 5.60 in 11 games in 1991. Yano only pitched 3 games for Orix in 1992, then he was traded back to the Daiei Hawks for cash. He had a 4.50 ERA in 15 games in 1993, then his ERA was 3.33 in 21 games in 1994 and he announced his retirement in 1995. He coached the Hiroshima Carp in 1996, and he was the pitching coach for the Hawks from 1997 to 2003. Yano became the pitching coach for the Chinatrust Whales of the CPBL from 2004 to 2005.

Overall, Yano was 21-23 with a 4.29 ERA, notched 19 saves in 386 appearances, struck out 295 and pitched 693 innings in 14 years in NPB.
