Biographical Information

Miles Head was a first baseman in the Oakland Athletics organization.

At age 14, he was rated the top player his age in the country by Baseball America. Miles hit .528, slugged 1.026 and hit 14 homers as a high school senior. He was originally drafted out of high school by the Boston Red Sox in the 26th round of the 2009 amateur draft. He turned down a scholarship from the University of Georgia to sign for a $335,000 bonus, far beyond the norms for a player of that round. The Red Sox scout was Tim Hyers. He made his debut that summer playing 10 games as a third baseman for the GCL Red Sox, where he hit .103. In 2010, he moved to first base and played for the Lowell Spinners of the New York-Penn League. He hit .240/.328/.341 with 16 doubles in 65 games. He led Lowell with 30 walks and his 8 sacrifice flies tied Jeff Flagg for the league lead.

He played his first full season in 2011, starting with the Greenville Drive of the South Atlantic League and then moving to the Salem Red Sox of the Carolina League in mid-season. Overall, he hit .299/.372/.515 in 129 games, showing excellent power with his 37 doubles and 22 homers at age 20. Baseball America ranked him as the 20th-best prospect in the SAL. After the season, the Red Sox sent him to Oakland in a trade in which they acquired P Andrew Bailey and OF Ryan Sweeney in return for OF Josh Reddick, P Raul Alcantara, and Head.
