Biographical Information

Raúl Alcántara pitched parts of two seasons for the Oakland Athletics.

Alcántara was signed by the Boston Red Sox as a 17-year-old out of the Dominican Republic in 2010. The scout was Manny Nanita. He began his career with the DSL Red Sox, going 5-3 with a 3.28 ERA in 13 starts. He moved stateside in 2011, starting with the GCL Red Sox and finishing for the Lowell Spinners. He was 1-1, 0.75 in 9 starts in the Gulf Coast League, and 0-3, 6.23 in 4 starts in the New York-Penn League. In 65 1/3 innings between the two clubs, he struck out 50 batters and walked 12. Baseball America rated him the 6th best prospect in the GCL, third among pitchers after Luis Heredia and Brenny Paulino. In spite of his limited track record, the A's asked to have Raúl included in the December 29th trade where they sent Andrew Bailey and Ryan Sweeney to the Red Sox; the A's also obtained Josh Reddick and Miles Head in the deal.

Alcántara made his major league debut with the A's on September 5, 2016, but it turned out to be a tough outing. Facing the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, he hit three batters and walked another in the 1st inning, then surrendered a home run in the 2nd and was done by the end of the 3rd as he was saddled with the A's 10-7 loss. He was outrighted off of Oakland's 40 man roster on the eve of the 2018 season and signed with the kt Wiz of the Korea Baseball Organization that November for the 2019 tilt. He was 11-11 with a 4.01 ERA for the Wiz, walking only 27 in 172 2/3 innings. With the Doosan Bears in 2020, he went 20-2 with a 2.54 ERA in 31 starts. He led the league in wins and won a Gold Glove, which in the KBO meant the best player at his position (AKA Pitcher of the Year in his case), not 'just' a defensive honor.

He is not to be confused with Raúl Alcantara, a fellow Dominican hurler, but a minor league southpaw in the Seattle Mariners chain.
