Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Mike Vasil played in the 2021 College World Series for the University of Virginia. Shortly afterwards, he was drafted by the New York Mets in the 8th round of the 2021 amateur draft. He made 3 starts for the FCL Mets after signing his first pro contract, with an ERA of 1.29 in 7 innings.

His pro career began in earnest in 2022, when he pitched 18 games - 17 starts - spread among three teams, the FCL Mets, the St. Lucie Mets of the Florida State League, and the Brooklyn Cyclones of the South Atlantic League. His combined record was 4-2, 3.53, with 85 strikeouts in 71 1/3 innings. After the season, he pitched in the Arizona Fall League. In 2023, he began the year with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies of the AA Eastern League, then was promoted to the Syracuse Mets of the AAA International League, meanwhile also pitching in the 2023 Futures Game. He went 5-6, 4.65 in 26 starts, logging 124 innings and recording 138 strikeouts. He was the Eastern League Pitcher of the Month in May.

In 2024, he spent a full season in AAA with Syracuse, going 8-10, 6.04 in 29 games (27 starts). He gave up 155 hits and 52 walks in 134 innings, leading to a high number of runs, and while he did strike out 109 batters, his K/9 rate fell markedly when compared to the previous season. Given all this, it was not a surprise that the Mets did not promote him to their 40-man roster after the season, leaving him exposed in the Rule V Draft. There, he was the 14th selection of the major league portion of the draft, being taken by the Philadelphia Phillies who immediately trade him to the Tampa Bay Rays in what was a pre-arranged deal (the Rays had earlier taken another player from the Mets, P Nathan Lavender, with their own pick).
