Biographical Information[edit]

Mike Stone reached AA as a player then became a college coach.

Stone was picked by the St. Louis Cardinals in the third round of the 1974 January draft. He split 1974 between the GCL Cardinals (11 for 38, 9 BB, 3 2B) and the St. Petersburg Cardinals (11 for 62, 10 BB). In '75, Mike batted .226/.294/.306 for St. Petersburg. He fielded .996 to lead the catchers in the Florida State League. Stone split 1976 between St. Petersburg (17 for 60, 9 BB, 3 2B, 2 HR) and the Arkansas Travelers (10 for 40, 4 BB, HR).

At age 22, he hit .224/.274/.327 in 60 games for St. Petersburg, seeing more action than either Terry Kennedy or Glenn Brummer behind the plate. Moving to the Los Angeles Dodgers chain 1978, Stone batted .234/.280/.338 for the Clinton Dodgers and .276/.363/.381 for the Lodi Dodgers.

Stone then went on to college to get his physical education degree. While at school, he played football. In 1982, he was head baseball coach at Northfield Mount Hermon School.

Graduating from UMass, Mike was head coach at the University of Vermont from 1983-1987, getting his master's degree while there. In 1988, he returned to UMass, now as head coach. He won almost 700games there, with a record just over .500, and won eight Atlantic-10 Conference regular season titles. He was named A-10 Coach of the Year in 1994, 1995 and 1996.

In 1996, UMass reached 40 wins for the first time ever.

Stone helped develop Ron Villone at UMass.
