Biographical Information[edit]

Catcher/first baseman Mike Amrhein played in the Chicago Cubs system from 1997 to 2002. Though he briefly played at Triple-A, he never made the major leagues.

With Notre Dame in 1996, Amrhein hit .323/.404/.595 with 13 home runs, 49 RBI and 63 runs scored in 62 games. He was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 99th round of the that year's amateur draft, but did not sign. In 1997, he hit .394/.476/.658 with 14 home runs, 71 RBI and 70 runs scored in 60 games. He signed after being taken by the Cubs in the tenth round of the 1997 amateur draft. He was signed by scout Scott May.

He began his professional career with the Low-A Williamsport Cubs that season, hitting .278/.308/.346 with 66 hits, one home run and 31 RBI in 62 games, tying for second in the New York-Penn League in GIDP with 11. In 1998, with the Single-A Rockford Cubbies, he hit .317/.367/.455 with 145 hits, 34 doubles, nine home runs and 87 RBI in 121 games. He led the Midwest League in doubles plays grounded into with 20.

With the High-A Daytona Cubs in 1999, Amrhein hit .278/.339/.410 with 125 hits, 27 doubles, 10 home runs and 58 RBI in 127 games, tying for third in the Florida State League in GIDP with 14. He hit .284/.370/.412 with nine home runs and 49 RBI in 104 games for the Double-A West Tenn Diamond Jaxx in 2000 and in 2001, also with West Tenn, he hit .241/.310/.325 with four home runs and 33 RBI in 96 games. In 2002, he played for West Tenn (63 G, .302/.373/.440, 5 HR, 30 RBI) and the Triple-A Iowa Cubs (29 G, .294/.371/.353, 0 HR, 11 RBI), hitting a combined .300/.373/.416 with five home runs and 41 RBI in 92 games. Despite the solid season, his professional ended after 2002.

Overall, Amrhein hit .285/.348/.401 with 606 hits, 38 home runs, 299 RBI and 247 runs scored in 602 games.

He died on July 5, 2012 at the age of 37 from an apparent suicide.
