Biographical Information[edit]

Michele Vassalotti has pitched in the minors and for the Italian national team.

He was signed by Milwaukee Brewers scout Fernando Veracierto in June 2017. [1] He was 1-3 with a 1.63 ERA and .81 WHIP for the DSL Brewers that summer. Pitching for Italy in the 2017 U-18 Baseball World Cup, he beat Nicaragua and had a no-decision in a fine start against the Netherlands. He was second on Italy in IP (11) and his 1.64 ERA was second to Tommaso Bationi among their qualifiers. [2]

The right-hander split 2018 between the AZL Brewers (5-1, 3.21 in 7 G) and Helena Brewers (0-1, 7.29 in 6 G). He tied for 4th in the Arizona League in wins. With the Rocky Mountain Vibes in '19, he had a 5-6, 6.09 record. He tied for third in the Pioneer League in wins, tied for third in losses and tied for the most homers allowed (12). The 2020 minor league season was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic. That winter, he had a 5.14 ERA in six outings for the Brisbane Bandits of the Australian Baseball League.

Vassalotti went 5-8 but with a 7.24 ERA for the 2021 Carolina Mudcats. He had 25 hit batsmen and 60 walks in 68 1/3 IP. He led Low-A East in HB by 11 and was second in walks. Returning to Carolina in 2022, he was much sharper at 9-2 with 7 saves, a 2.64 ERA and 1.11 WHIP. He tied for 5th in the Carolina League in saves (even with Alexander Cornielle, Luis Devers and Austin Vernon) and also tied Adisyn Coffey for 7th in saves. He tied Josh Lindblom for 6th in the Brewers chain in wins and also tied for 6th in saves (with Trevor Tietz).

Back with Italy for the 2023 World Baseball Classic, he turned in a solid start but lost to Harold Araúz and Panama; he allowed two hits and two walks in four while fanning three but surrendered a solo shot to José Ramos while his team was not mustering any offense. Sam Gaviglio took over in the 5th. Only Matt Harvey pitched more innings for the Azzurri in the 2023 WBC. [3] After a rocky summer for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (6.75 ERA, no decisions in 24 G; 1.93 WHIP but 42 K in 34 2/3 IP), he made Italy's team again, this time for the 2023 European Championship.
