Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Michael Madsen was picked by the Oakland Athletics in the 21st round of the 2005 amateur draft, out of Ohio State University. he had a very strong first season with the Vancouver Canadians of the Northwest League, going 6-1, 1.69 in 15 games and made the league's post-season All-Star team. However, 2006 was much rougher, with a combined ERA of 7.34 in 26 starts between the Stockton Ports of the California League and the Midland RockHounds of the Texas League. He gave up 168 hits in 128 2/3 innings, and his record was 6-11. However, he managed to set things right the next year, as he pitched for the same two teams, and also with the Sacramento River Cats of the AAA Pacific Coast League. Overall, his record was 11-5, 3.84 in 25 starts. He gave up just 126 hits in 147 2/3 innings, and also struck out 129 batters. He was selected to play for the United States team at the 2007 Futures Game, which was the high point of his career. he was also a mid-season All-Star in the Texas League.

As is often the case, an injury set him back in 2008, as he was limited to just 3 games and 13 innings. It was more of the same in 2009, as he pitched just 4 times, totaling 9 innings. In 2010, he was back at Stockton and made just 6 starts, going 1-4, 5.00 and pitching 27 innings. The A's let him go on July 12th and he gave it one last shot in the independent leagues, with the Camden Riversharks of the Atlantic League that same year. He made 10 starts and was 2-3, 4.65, with 52 strikeouts in 50 2/3 innings, but also 33 walks. He retired after that season.
