Biographical Information[edit]
Michael Hill was named to Florida Marlins General Manager post after the 2007 season. He was promoted to President of baseball operations late in 2013 and was replaced by Dan Jennings. By this time, the team had been renamed the "Miami Marlins".
During a bizarre 2015 season, owner Jeffrey Loria fired manager Mike Redmond early in the season and convinced Jennings to step into the managerial job, in spite of not having any professional managerial or coaching experience. Mike Berger took over as GM on an interim basis, while the experiment failed to have the expected results. Jennings was fired as manager at the end of the season, but his future status was left in limbo. On October 29th, team President David Samson announced a series of moves, with Don Mattingly being hired to manage the team in 2016, Jennings being definitively fired, and Hill gaining the title of General Manager once again, although it was also made clear that Assistant GM Berger and Vice-President of Player Personnel Jeff McAvoy would also play significant roles.
His second stint as GM lasted six seasons, including a change of ownership as Derek Jeter took over as team President following the Marlins' sale in 2017. He was let go after the 2020 season, his 19th in the organization, and ironically the one that marked the Marlins' return to postseason play for the first time since their second World Series title in 2003.
During his second stint as GM, he was the only African-American to hold such a position, as colleagues Ken Williams and Dave Stewart, both former players, had stepped down in the interim. After being replaced as Miami's GM' he was hired by Major League Baseball as senior vice president of on-field operations. His responsibilities include, among other things, MLB's umpiring staff.
