Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Jeff McAvoy spent three seasons in professional baseball, all in the Montreal Expos organization, then became a scout.

He went undrafted after attending the University of Mississippi but signed with the Expos as an amateur free agent in may of 2000. He had begun his college career at Western Carolina University, then transferred to Mississippi after his freshman year. He was in the starting rotation for three years with the school's baseball squad, compiling a record of 20-17, although with a combined ERA of 5.46.

He began his professional career with the Cape Fear Crocs of the South Atlantic League in 2000, going 1-2, 4.42 in 22 games as a relief pitcher; he also earned a brief promotion to the AAA Ottawa Lynx of the International League when the team had some injured pitchers, jumping a couple of levels as a result of his experience pitching for a top-rank college. He went 1-0 with a virgin ERA in 6 games for the Lynx. In 2001, he went 2-2, 3.64 in 46 games of the Jupiter Hammerheads of the Florida State League, also racking up 3 saves. He was the second-most-used hurler on the club, after Anthony Ferrari and tied for 7th in the FSL in games pitched. In 2002, he started the year with the Brevard County Manatees, who had replaced Jupiter as the Expos' FSL affiliate. He went 3-3, 5.40 in 12 games, including 6 starts, but was still promoted to AA with the Harrisburg Senators, where he was 2-3, 6.23 in 16 games. He also made a one-off start for Ottawa, giving up only 1 run in 5 innings and earning a win. As a result, his career ERA in AAA was 0.71.

Jeff was invited to the Expos major league spring training in 2003, but a shoulder injury ended his career. He became a scout in the Houston Astros organization from 2006 to 2009 before joining the Tampa Bay Rays. In 2013, he was hired by the Miami Marlins as their director of professional scouting and was later promoted to Vice President in charge of player personnel.
