The son of Bob Brenly, Mike Brenly began his pro career in 2008. He was picked in the 43rd round of the 2005 amateur draft by the Chicago Cubs. Going on to college, he hit .284/~.400/.418 as a freshman and made no errors at catcher. In 2007, the sophomore batted .278/~.322/.385 for the UNLV Rebels. As a junior in 2008, he hit .307/.378/.434 and fielded .994 as the club's primary catcher. The Cubs chose him in the 36th round of the 2008 amateur draft. Brenly played in the Cubs' minor league system from 2008-2012. He made his pro debut with the Boise Hawks and did well, producing at a .325/.399/.429 clip while seeing regular action behind the plate. Had he qualified, he would have ranked 5th in the Northwest League in average, right behind top prospect Josh Vitters. In 2013 he appeared in 8 games for the Reno Aces in the Arizona Diamondbacks system which was the only year he reached AAA. He spent 2014 and the early part of 2015 playing for the Portland Sea Dogs in the Boston Red Sox minor league system. Overall Brenly hit .241/.297/.324 while appearing in 477 minor league games.
On May 6, 2015 Brenly retired as a player and accepted an offer from the Red Sox to work as a major league bullpen catcher. He stayed in this role through the 2021 season. In 2022, the Red Sox promoted him to a Major League Staff Assistant position.
