Biographical Information[edit]
Melanie Newman is the radio play-by-play announcer for the Baltimore Orioles, having been appointed to the position in 2020. Her debut was delayed by a few months by the Coronavirus pandemic, until August of that year, but she was the first woman to hold the position for the team. She had studied broadcasting at Troy University and after graduation worked as a broadcaster for several minor league teams, including the Frisco RoughRiders. She also worked as a sideline reporter for Regional cable network Fox Sports Southwest.
In 2019, she made history when she teamed up with Suzie Cool to broadcast games for the Salem Red Sox, being part of the first all-female broadcast tandem in the minor leagues. She was part of an even bigger first on July 20, 2021, when she was the play-by-play announcer in the first all-female broadcast team to work a major league game. The game was between the Orioles and Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field and joining her were Sarah Langs as the analyst, Alanna Rizzo as the on-field reporter, and Heidi Watney and Lauren Gardner as hosts of the pre-game and post-game shows. The game was broadcast on YouTube and available nationwide as a result.
She grew up in the Atlanta, GA area.
